For Children’s Mental Health Week (9–15 February), the theme “This Is My Place” highlights the importance of nurturing spaces, where children and young people feel they belong. The theme is especially relevant to Home-Start Bedfordshire. Home is a place of belonging in early childhood.
The first five years shape a child’s future. For young children, their relationship with caregivers shapes their sense of place in the world. Parents help children learn, manage their feelings, and build confidence. The way a child’s brain develops is closely tied to their emotions. Evidence suggests emotional regulation is built into brain development in the early years. Difficult experiences, even before birth, can affect development and future mental health. However, a strong, secure bond with an adult can help protect children from lasting harm.
Four decades of experience have taught us that a child’s mental health is inseparable from the stability and well-being of their family. Parents are not superhuman; we all need others to lean on in hard times. Being a parent isn’t always easy. Life happens, families struggle with illness, disability, bereavement, and more. Empowerment through free, non-judgmental, and confidential support is vital for local families with young children.
Thank you to all our volunteers: home-visiting, SEND parent mentors, and parent group leaders. Your time and skills nurture strong bonds between parents and children. Your empathy and support for local families during tough times make a real difference for children’s mental health. By supporting parents through the highs and lows of the early years, you help protect the mental health of the next generation.
