June 10th – 16th, 2024 is Infant Mental Health Awareness Week. Organised by the Parent Infant Foundation, the week aims to raise awareness about the critical importance of infant mental health. It is a campaign supporting a pillar of our cause: safeguarding, protecting, and preserving children’s and parents’ mental and physical health.
The week’s theme, ‘Speak Up For Babies’, highlights the power caregivers have to influence a baby’s emotional wellbeing. Although babies can’t talk, they express their feelings using body language and noises. Parents support their babies’ emotional and cognitive growth by being attentive and responding to their needs.
The first 1000 days of a child’s life significantly impact their future development. Yet, tragedy and hardship can hit families with infants. When parents struggle, so can children. That’s why our local volunteers are here, empowering parents with practical and emotional support during difficult times. They encourage parent-infant bonds and responsive caregiving alongside the nurture babies need to thrive.
Accordingly, this week is an opportunity to celebrate the power of nurturing interactions and positive experiences for babies. By speaking up for babies and prioritising their mental health, we can invest in a generation of emotionally healthy and resilient children.
