We know firsthand the power of empowering parents. Life isn’t always a walk in the park. Yet, when parents are empowered, families are more resilient, and children can thrive.
Being a Parent Is Not Always Easy
There is no such thing as the perfect parent. All we can do is try our best. At the best of times, raising children is rewarding but also physically and emotionally demanding. Constant demands on time and attention with a lack of sleep can sap our energy. Dealing with tantrums and other challenging behaviours even more so. Managing day-to-day family life can feel like an uphill struggle. Our capacity to cope can be tested.
As parents, we are all experts on our own children. We know our children’s needs and preferences better than anyone else. Home-Start stands alongside local parents, empowering families so they:
- Have the information and resources they need.
- Take care of their well-being.
- Are confident in their parenting abilities.
- Gain positive parenting skills to have quality interactions with their children.
- Take advantage of methods for managing family stress.
- Can make informed decisions about their children’s health, education, and well-being.
- Can speak up for their children and advocate for their needs.
Life Is Not Always Easy
Life doesn’t always go to plan; there are often bumps in the road. For example, serious illness, mental ill health, or bereavement can stop any family in their tracks. If our capacity to cope as parents is overwhelmed, the wheels can fall off. Some obstacles are just too large to overcome on our own. We all need someone to turn to in these hard, stressful times. But what if we have no one to hear us? What if no one even notices we’re losing control of the situation?
Every parent deserves help when they ask for it. Certainly, no parent should worry about their child’s well-being on their own. When parents feel powerless and unable to cope, Home-Start is there when they need us the most.
Our volunteers listen and provide information, reassurance and assistance. They empower parents with compassionate, non-judgemental and confidential support. Parents have a shoulder to lean on, reducing stress and anxiety. This helps them maintain a supportive and nurturing home environment for their children. With support, the wheels of family life can stay in motion through difficult circumstances. This is vital for families with young children because childhood can’t wait.
Relationships Are Not Always Easy
Parents may find they’ve taken a wrong turn. They’ve lost their well-being and sense of self. Their partner is abusive, and they’ve reached a fork in the road. It’s an unsafe environment for their family. Leaving with their children to live in a refuge, they carry their trauma. Often, parents and children find themselves alone, isolated from friends and family in a new area.
Every parent fleeing domestic abuse deserves support. Our volunteers are there, helping them rebuild their lives. Home-Start empowers survivors of domestic abuse with the tools to take back ownership of their right to a happy future. Offering assistance to parents so that all our children get the best start in life.
Chloe
Chloe and her 3-year-old little girl had fled to the area to escape domestic violence and rebuild her life. She was very isolated, with no family support or friends. Chloe found her little girl’s behaviour difficult to manage at times. She was also under the stress of being taken to court by her ex-partner.
Home-Start volunteer Jan visited weekly, providing emotional support for Chloe and practical help with her daughter. Jan assisted Chloe with making new friends and helped to bring back some fun into family life.
“My daughter gets so excited when she knows that Jan is coming to visit. She is just amazing and it is the one thing I look forward to all week. She is such a good listener and really encourages and lifts me up. I feel so much more able to concentrate on the things that I can change and accept the things I cannot change. Jan has been such a huge help to us, I can’t imagine how much more difficult this would have been without this incredibly valuable service.” – Names have been changed for confidentiality.
Stronger Resilient Families
Empowerment is a form of self-help. Families are more resilient when parents are empowered with information and resources to help themselves. When parents feel powerless in times of hardship and tragedy, support empowers families and makes them stronger.
Empowered parents are more likely to be confident in their parenting abilities, make informed decisions about their child’s care, and advocate for their child’s needs. This can lead to better outcomes for children in all areas of their development.
